Obituary of Donald B. Sommers

Donald Brian Sommers, aged 85, passed away surrounded by his family on May 31 st , 2025. Don was originally from Mountainhome, Pennsylvania. He and his brother, Barry Sr, who still resides in Pennsylvania, were the sons of Donald S. and Wanda (Anglemire) Sommers. Don spent most of his adult life in Millport, New York where he lived with his wife of 57 years, Barbara (Worden) Sommers. He was incredibly proud to raise his daughter and son. He also welcomed his daughter in law, Liz, and son-in- law, Pat, into his family with great love and open arms. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Noah, Sam, and Sydney. Don completed his bachelor's degree at East Stroudsburg and served in the Army Reserves while beginning his work in the field of education. He went on to complete his Master's degree from Elmira College. Don worked as a Jr. High School Science teacher at Ernie Davis in Elmira until his retirement in 1995. He then worked as a professional Blacksmith for over 20 years. He and his wife were active members of Horseheads United Methodist Church. Don was a man who devoted his life to family and to making the world a better place. The impact he has made over the past eight decades has been truly inspiring. He was a gifted woodworker, blacksmith, teacher, avid environmentalist and birder, nature photographer, outdoor adventurer, world traveler, ballroom dancer. scientist, electrician, sailor, humanitarian and the ultimate romantic. He will be remembered as the most loving husband, father and "Pop-Pop" that a family could ever hope for. The family welcomes those who loved and admired Don to join them in a celebration of his life on June 13 th at the Horseheads United Methodist Church. Calling hours will begin at 4 pm, followed by a celebration of life service at 5pm. After the service, the family will continue to host a time to share pictures and memories in the church fellowship hall. Light food and drink will be served. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Don's name to The Nature Conservancy, The Chemung Valley Audubon Society, or The Alzheimer's Association.
