Obituary of Tom Burlew

Merton “Tom” Burlew Age 77 of Lowman, NY, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 11, 2015, at home surrounded by his family due to complications from cancer for over 20 years. Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara A. (Westbrook) Burlew; and three daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Scott Beach, Lowman, NY, Diana and Fred Durfey, Odessa, NY, Dawn and Rod Schmidt, Lowman, NY; and grandchildren, Shelly and Ed Rozell, Corning, NY, Russell and Christine Beach, Horseheads, NY, Lauren and Ted Swan, Elmira, NY, Joshua and Megan Durfey Holly Springs, NC, Ben and Brooke Durfey, Elmira Heights, Sheena Durfey, Ponta Gorda, FL and Sydney Schmidt, Lowman, NY as well as four great grandchildren (Jillian, Emerson, Emery, Bryce); and his brother, Daniel (Hazel) Burlew, Lowman, NY; several nieces and nephews; and his Golden Retriever, Wren. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Merton and Marie Burlew; and great grandson, Jamison Durfey. Tom retired as superintendent from the Village of Horseheads Water Department after 31 years of dedicated service. Tom enjoyed working on the farm, living in the home that he and Barbara built and raised their family in, fixing all types of equipment, hunting and shooting with his friends, but most of all, he cherished his wife and family. Tom was a member and Past Master of Breesport Lodge F. & A.M, Cashmere Grotto, member of Fur, Fin & Feathers Sportsman Club, Sullivan Trail Rod & Gun Club, Erin Town Board, Elmira Heights American Legion and North Chemung United Methodist Church. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads Today Wed. Oct. 14, 2015 from 2-4:00 and again from 7-9:00 pm. His service will be celebrated in the North Chemung United Methodist Church 677 Breesport Rd-North Chemung Rd. Lowman Thursday Oct. 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors will follow in North Chemung Cemetery. Dedications to Tom may be directed to the North Chemung Food Pantry, 677 Breesport-North Chemung Road, Lowman, NY 14861. NOTICE: Officers and Members of Free and Accepted Masons will gather at the Barber Funeral Home on Wednesday to conduct a service for their departed brother.
