Obituary of Pearl Mae (Haynes) Schulze Sutphen
SUTPHEN,
PEARL MAE HAYNES SCHULZE SUTPHEN age 104
was greeted in heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 22, 2016.
Pearl was the third of eight children born to George and Blanche Haynes in Mina, PA.
The family of 10 moved to the Elmira Heights area after a fire destroyed their
Pennsylvania home. At the age of 16 Pearl married the love of her life, Kenneth Schulze.
These happy years ended upon Kenneth’s death in 1959. In 1960 she married Auriol Sutphen who owned and farmed grape vineyards in Hector, NY. Theirs was a happy time as well until his death in 1985.
Pearl was an active member of Breesport Baptist Church for over 70 years, where she always enjoyed participating in all of the church activities. Her church life was her life. She was president of the Breesport Baptist Missionaries’ Society for many years. Pearl gave her life to the Lord in 1945 and grew in her faith for the rest of her years. Her faith carried her through life’s ups and downs. Family and friends will remember her:
love and enthusiasm for life, her love of Jesus. As a loving caregiver of family and friends in need. As a baker of great pies, a green thumb gardener, enthusiastic domino player, a gracious hostess to missionaries and others, a lover of Seneca Lake and her cottage, a proud fisherwoman and as a prolific letter writer with beautiful penmanship.
Pearl will also be remembered as an actress in church plays and for Bethany Village commercials, a great story teller, good listener, an avid photographer, a successful turkey hunter at age 96, an author of her own book at age 100 and as a Salvation Army bell ringer on her 104th birthday.
Pearl loved life and always wore a smile. Her mottos were:
“If you see someone without a smile give them one of yours.”
“It’s not what we have but what we enjoy that brings us happiness.”
Pearl loved the Lord, she loved people and she loved life.
Pearl is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Breesport Baptist Church 240 Church Breesport, NY on Friday April 1, 2016 from 5:00-6:00 pm. A memorial service celebrating her life will follow there in church beginning at 6:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Twin Tiers Christian Academy, P.O. Box K, Breesport, NY 14816.
