Obituary of Lew Baker
BAKER, Lewis M. Jr. “Lew”
Age 86 and long time resident of Pine Valley, NY,
was called home to be with the Lord and Savior Thurs. Sept. 15, 2016 while surrounded by his family. Lew was born in Philadelphia, PA, Feb 22, 1930 to Louis and Florence Baker. Lew grew up in Towanda PA, and spent his summers on his aunt and uncle’s farm. Lew, known as “The Duke” affectionately referred to Nellie as his “Tammy Wynette”. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing in his younger years. Lew was proprietor of Lew’s Grocery in Millport in the 1960’s. As time progressed, he renewed his relationship with his Lord and Savior. He retired from Dalrymple Gravel and Contracting as a concrete mixer driver. Upon his retirement, Lew went back to work driving school bus for Horseheads Central School District. He became involved in the Colson Prison Ministry and became Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Millport. Lew was known for his Bull Alligator Brand lawn furniture. The hand crafted picnic tables, chairs and lawn ornaments were sold in his front yard in Pine Valley. Lew was known for his generosity and touched the lives of many through his ministry, both online and in church. Lew’s online presence, Blues Blasting Ministry, reached followers around the world. His favorite pastimes included spending time with his family and cheering for the Pittsburg Steelers. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Nellie. He is also survived by sons, Gary (Carolyn) Blend of Ocala, FL, Robert (Donna) Baker of Horseheads, Steve (Sue) Baker of also Horseheads; daughter, “Daddy’s Little Girl” Mary (Perry) Coon also of Horseheads; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 7 great great-grandchildren and many close and caring friends including Herb Bauman family and Kay Rice family. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Sunday Sept. 18, 2016 from 1-3:00 pm and again from 5-7:00 pm. His service celebrating his life will take place at the funeral home on Monday Sept. 19, 2016 at 10:00 am with longtime friend and Pastor, Steve Thompson officiating.
