Obituary of Frederick G. Young
Frederick Gerald Young, 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, NY.
Fred leaves behind his wife and lifelong companion of 64 years, Lucille Young; his three daughters, Kimberley Hurd (Bruce) of Waynesboro, PA, Susan Personius (Bruce) of Corning, NY, and Sandra Haupt (Stephen) of Rochester, NY; siblings, Louis Young and Reva Cardi; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, Helen Erb, Emery Young and Mary Phillips.
Born to Gerald A. Young and Beatrice M. Post in Athens, PA, Fred served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force for six years. A Sergeant First Class, he was stationed in Germany for four years and was a WWII Veteran, having served one-and-a-half years in Japan. Fred retired from Westinghouse as a General Foreman.
What was most important to Fred was his beloved wife Lucy. The day he met her in his hometown’s soda shop while on military leave, he knew she would be the woman he would marry – and he did, on May 11, 1952 at the First Methodist Church in Waverly, NY. The two have been inseparable ever since. They raised three beautiful daughters in the house that Fred helped build in Horseheads, NY. They loved to camp and eagerly traveled down South to Myrtle Beach in the winter months. They were the proud owners of many dogs and cherished them dearly.
As they grew older, their close partnership grew even stronger. When Lucy had a sudden stroke 12 years ago and was moved to a nursing home, Fred greeted her each and every morning and stayed by her side until dusk. He followed this same routine for 10 years, never missing a day. After becoming ill himself two years ago, he joined Lucy in the same nursing facility. Lucy was the only thing that kept him going towards the end of his days. She was his purpose.
Fred was the definition of a doting husband, even now. At his request, a funeral service will be postponed until he can be buried with his other half. In the meantime, please consider submitting a donation in Fred’s name to the Chemung County Alzheimer’s Support Group, Chemung County Office for Aging, PO Box 588, 425 Pennsylvania Ave, Elmira, NY 14902.
The family would like to thank the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their compassion and loving care during the many years Fred and Lucy have lived at the nursing home. They would also ask that you deeply cherish your loved ones, as that’s what Fred would have wanted.
