Obituary of Robert F. Ruhmel

Ruhmel, Robert F. “Barney” Age 79 of Big Flats, NY passed away after a long illness on Dec. 9, 2017. Bob was born Feb. 19, 1938 in Elmira, NY to the late John Jr. and Helen (Frederick) Ruhmel. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Iolani (Watkins) Ruhmel; Daughters, Susan (Bill) Cantando of Horseheads, with their daughters, Shanann and Audrey; Cynthia (Dennis) Clark of Catlin with their children, Colton, Gavin and Sarah; Brothers, John Ruhmel III of Ithaca, Joseph (Janet) Ruhmel of Horseheads and Richard (Donna) Ruhmel of St. Petersburg, FL; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Bob was a longtime builder in the area and well known for his custom Pine cabinetry. He also worked for Gough Holding Corp and the Town of Big Flats in the Building and Code Enforcement office. He was a US Air Force Veteran and member of the American Legion and local Military Honor Guard. Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman, an avid outdoorsmen and proud member of the NRA, Finger Lakes Trolling Assoc. and Chemung Co. Rod and Gun Club. Barney, as he was affectionately known, was also member of the Elmira Beagle Club and long standing member of Big Flats Vol. Fire Department where he also served as Lieutenant, he loved coaching softball for 10 years in Big Flats. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads Fri. Dec. 15, 2017 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm where his service will be celebrated at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Friends are further invited to join the family for a light reception at the Dairy Barn, 107 Hibbard Rd. in Big Flats immediately following the cemetery service.
