Maryellyn Hunt

Obituary of Maryellyn Hunt

HUNT, Maryellyn “The grass stoops not, she treads on it so lightly.” William Shakespeare In 1956, Maryellyn chose these words to appear under her high school yearbook photo. And so, it only seems fitting that her self-selected quote should also appear here, beneath her photo, once again, a mere 6X years hence. Quick with a smile, an offer to help, or a kind word… Maryellyn was all of these things and more. And it was as such that she gently passed, away Fri. Sept. 28, 2018 at the age of 80. Maryellyn was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a friend. And, “yes, absolutely” (as she was fond of saying when she was in agreement with someone) a very lightly treading soul indeed. Quick with a smile, an offer to help, or a kind word, she will be missed by family and friends alike. She is preceded in death by her then-infant son, John William Hunt, as well as her husband of 46 years, Sheldon K. Hunt Jr. She is survived by her brother, William Hogan of Rochester, NY, as well as her children and her current and former son-and daughters-in-law, Joseph Hunt, Richard (Barbara Klein) Hunt all of Horseheads, NY; Jennifer (Michael) Hatch of Pine City, NY, and Sheldon K. (Laura) Hunt 3rd of Seattle, WA. She also leaves behind her sisters-and brothers-in-law, Rita and Harold “Pete” Hunt of Rochester, NY, and Jeannine and George Stone of Millerton, PA. Additionally, Maryellyn is survived by her six granddaughters: Alyssa, Emily, Megan, and Sarah Hunt, all from Horseheads, NY, as well as Landyn and Rylee Hatch from Pine City, NY. Maryellyn was a graduate of Notre Dame High School’s inaugural class of 1956 in Elmira, NY, and The College of Saint Elizabeth, in Morristown, NJ, class of 1960. She was also a long-time congregant of Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Elmira Heights, NY, and in her later years enjoyed attending services at the First Presbyterian Church in Horseheads, NY. Throughout her life she was an avid collector of simple treasures. Seashells, sand dollars and lost coins being some of her most pleasurable finds. Sales, markdowns and bargains being some of the others. Flying… not so much ... unless it involved a trip to an ocean's edge. A special thanks is offered to those, not already listed above, who kept in touch with her in recent years. Elaine and Joe Rodman, Janet Shelden, Tim and Luann Pelot, Fran Soroka, Dolores Ennis, Maureen Holly, Wally Hunt, Pete Hunt (Jr) and family, The Sisters of The Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament, Carol Hazen (her best friend from 4th grade), and especially Kristin Kuntz and Danny Knapp. Your cards, letters and lasting connections were always most appreciated. And yes, you all provided the nicest of mirrors in which Maryellyn’s light was so comfortably allowed the chance to shine. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Fri. Oct. 5, 2018 from 11:30-1:00 pm. Her service will follow there at the funeral home at 1pm with long-time friend, The Rev. Ed Golden officiating. In lieu of flowers, those wishing are encouraged to remember Maryellyn with memorials in her name to the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA 2435 State Rt. 352 Elmira NY 14903. Additionally, holding a good thought for the kind and compassionate staff at Bethany Village's Community Home Care division, as well as Bethany Village's Adult Day Club, would be most appreciated. These great crews, led by Michelle Kelly, RN, Colleen Titus, RN, Ken Dawson RN and Ms. Terri Russell, never failed to go above and beyond in ensuring Maryellyn was afforded the opportunity to, as always, gently move through the most recent stages of her life, as if… “The grass stoops not, she treads on it so lightly.” "We'll see ya Mom."
