Obituary of John H. Voorhees

VOORHEES, John H. Age 61 and long time resident of Kahler Rd. in Big Flats and more recently of Third St. Horseheads passed away after a brief illness Jan. 13, 2010 at Elcor Health Service Center. John was born July 6, 1948 one of eight children to Howard and Anna (Kahler) Voorhees; John is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Kenneth (Gail) Voorhees of Horseheads, NY, Anna (Lee) Russ of Big Flats, NY, Meredith (Judy) Voorhees of Elmira, NY, Evelyn (Mack) Rhodes of Horseheds, NY, Edith (Dave) Reese of Pine City, NY, Mary (Robert) Plumley of Raleigh, NC and and Donald (Kay) Voorhees of Horseheads, NY; Many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews and a host of friends. John had worked for several lawn care companies including Horton Landscaping and Maintenance Specialists in Big Flats for over 31 years, Terry Hill Lawn Care in Elmira Heights and more recently S&S Signs and Safety Equipment in Big Flats. He was a member of the Big Flats Historical Society, The Mutual Vigilantes Society, the Farm Bureau and Chemung County 4-H. John loved getting together for a good dinner and spending time with his family, he loved picnics’ going out to eat, going to the lake and always looked forward the Chemung County Fair, hanging out in the cow barn, getting a serving of salt potatoes and a good sausage sandwich. John will also be remembered and missed at his other frequent dining stops including but certainly not limited to; Poppy’s in Horseheads, Wellsburg Diner, Sugar and Spice, Gerould’s, Pot luck at Big Flats and Horseheads Historical Society and many area church Harvest dinners and functions. A gentle smile and tender touch are a just few of things we will remember so much. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Monday Jan. 18, 2010 from 3-6:00 pm. His service will take place there at the funeral home at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 pm with the Rev. Richard Price officiating. Interment will take place in the Spring in Rural Home Cemetery in Big Flats, NY
