Mary has impacted my life since I was a small child in kindergarten at Newfield. My mother, Thelma Johnston, and Mary met as young teachers and even when my parents settled in Vermont, she and Margaret made many trips to our home. Mary and my mother were great friends sharing many a phone conversation and sometimes a visit. When my mother died 6 years ago at the age of 96, I continued the phone conversations with Mary, solving all the world problems, and visited her whenever it was possible. Her warmth and support and interest in our family will forever be a blessing. Love you, Mary.

As some people journey through life, they leave footprints wherever they go - footprints of kindness & love, courage & compassion, humor & inspiration, joy & faith. Even when they are gone, as we look back we can see clearly the trail they left behind - a trail bright with hope that invites us to follow. Miss Humptom did all that and more. She was our history teacher at NCS, but the class we remember most is our senior year when she taught POD (Problems of Democracy). She instilled a love of country & countrymen & taught us to think about issues & to see both sides of a situation. She lit up the room - there was something about her presence - however, she always made us feel like we were the most important focus whenever we had the opportunity to meet & greet her. Her impact continued through the many years since our graduation from NCS as she continued to mentor, encourage, laugh & be a good & true friend to us. We talked about everything from A to Z with our dear Miss Humpton - we will miss this dear lady so very much. We are so glad that we took the time to make that call on March 12 to wish her a Happy Birthday that only God knew would be her last. Although she is no longer with us physically, she will always be in our hearts!

It is almost 12:30 PM and I am sitting here at my computer in Trumansburg composing an apology to Mary. I think Mary would be forgiving and understand that as we grow older it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of ""appointments"" of all kinds. Ok..so I thought I remembered from your obituary that I could visit from 11-4....my bad.
I am sorry that I will not meet your relatives and see once more some of your friends and students from Newfield. I am glad for the few times in that last two years that we did not let Covid stand in our way and prevent us from enjoying long chats and reminiscences at your Horseheads apartment.
So this is not goodbye. I will continue to think of you, our shared time at Newfield Central School, and the many students there for whom we had mutual appreciations and concerns. Who knows, I bet it is a nice drive to East Smithfield...You never know......

Miss Humpton was our American Government teacher in Middle School in 1971 and because of her I began to take an interest in our government. Her class was never boring and she treated everyone with attention and respect. She expected the same in return and got it. I enjoyed how she challenged us and would speak with you one on one. Whenever I saw her in Newfield, I made a point of speaking with her. One of her comments I most remember was,""It takes a community to raise a child"" A bright person that will not be forgotten. Teachers have a lasting impact on their students. God Bless Mary.

Miss Humpton, as she was called by her N.C.S. High
School students, was a great history teacher. She was big on, current events, & you had to bring in a
newspaper article, hear something on television or
the radio. She would also do “ pop quizzes,” every now & than. She made learning “fun.”
She was, one of the chaperone’s, for our: 1971 Class Trip to, Washington, D.C.
Miss Humpton, wanted the very best for her N.C.S.
Students.
My family & I, would see & talk to, Miss Humpton & Miss Weaver after mass, @ The Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca, N.Y.
Rest In Peace Miss Humpton!

Throughout my life I learned many things from my cousin Mary. She taught me how to make red onion and butter sandwiches. She taught me how to make dolls from hollyhock blossoms. She taught me how to gather eggs from under a nesting hen. The most important things she taught me were by example: to be steadfast and faithful, to step up when someone needs you, to be kind, to be brave, to be true to yourself, and that love is above all things. Thank you, Mary, for your life, your love, and your lessons.
