Obituary of Warren K Miller

WARREN K. “SKIP” MILLER, Another member of the Greatest Generation, passed away on August 25, 2021 at 98 years of age. The son of the late Ernest V. Miller and Maude E. Ruebman Miller, he was born July 30, 1923 at Kenoza Lake, NY in Sullivan County. A 1940 graduate of Delaware Valley Central School, and a 1942 graduate of SUNY Farmingdale, Long Island, he served in the United States Air Force from October 1942 until October 1945. Warren was a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator, assigned to the 450th Bomb Group in the 15th Air Force. He was shot down and wounded over Italy on April 25th, 1944, captured and then held as a prisoner of war at the German prison camp, Stalag Luft III. He survived forced marches through the German winter as the Allies advanced and finally liberated on April 29, 1945 by Patton’s Third Army. As an active reservist, he was recalled to duty in 1951 and served a tour of duty in Korea. He retired from the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection as an Assistant Civil Engineer. A long time resident of the Callicoon, NY area, Warren moved to Horseheads, NY in September of 2000. Warren dedicated his life in service to others. To that end, he was a member and Council member of the First Lutheran Church in Jeffersonville, and a communicant of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Horseheads. He was also a charter member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter #198, Monticello; a life member of the Hudson Valley Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War at West Point; a life member of American Legion Post #442, Horseheads; a life member of the 450th Bomb Group Association; and a member of the Air Force Association; a 70+ year member of Delaware Lodge #561 F.&A.M.; a past District Deputy Grand Master of the Sullivan Masonic District; and a dual member of Horseheads Old Oak Lodge #364 F.&A.M.. Warren lived his life and raised his family by the principles of honesty, integrity, and humility. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Dowitsch Miller on February 23, 2010. He is survived by his two sons, Creighton J. Miller and wife Cecelia of Burdett, NY; Glenn R. Miller and wife Marcelle of Walton, NY; a daughter Judy Miller-Lyons of Highland Mills, NY and son-in-law Marc Lyons of Monticello, New York; three grandchildren, Heather (Dan) Kennedy, Hilary (Mirko) Miller and Brian (Stephanie) Miller; great-grandchildren, Ellla Rae, Keira Elizabeth, and Caysie; and his cherished friend and companion Jean Steiner. The world is truly a better place because Warren was in it, and he will be missed by many. Agreeable to Warren’s wishes, there will be no visitation, Military or Masonic Service. A private family memorial Service will be held at Barber Funeral Home, with interment of cremains and a graveside service will be held at the Hortonville Cemetery, Hortonville, NY. Memorial gifts may be made to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Horseheads, NY, the Horseheads American Legion Post #442, or a charity of one’s choice.
