Brigid Galusha

Obituary of Brigid Galusha

Brigid Galusha, 91, of Horseheads, NY, passed away on September 21, following a brief illness. Brigid Bisgood was born in NYC on March 21, 1931, daughter of Elizabeth Bisgood (NYC) and Anthony Bisgood (London). She grew up on Long Island, in rural Vermont, and in Westchester County; she finally moved to Elmira in 1943. She graduated from Abbot Academy, Andover, MA in 1948. Brigid attended Elmira College where she met her husband, Neal (deceased), an ROTC and agriculture student at Cornell. The couple wed in Furstenfelbruck, Germany; they were married for 65 years. After returning to the states they lived in Elmira, Connecticut, Toledo, and back to Horseheads. Then, in 1968, the couple and their four children moved into the house of their dreams, an old farm house with 100 acres. Hers was a strong voice of reason in the tumultuous 60s and 70s. She took on good causes, those in distress, and the needs of the community. She was active in The Junior League, the League of Women's Voters, and her town's planning board. She served as the president of the YWCA, volunteered at Planned Parenthood, and dedicated herself to her church serving on the vestry, and stewardship committees. She was a born performer. She played in several Elmira Little Theater productions. She was a member of the church choir and sang with Crystal Cords. When they moved to the "big house" Brigid's interest and talents for gardening flourished. The family hosted weddings amid the multiple gardens. She began writing a garden column and was featured in the Corning Leader on Sundays. Brigid also filmed a gardening TV show once a month for Senior Notebook. She became known as "The Plant Lady." Neal and Brigid were firm believers in the power of couples' vacations. They travelled twice a year to exotic locations. South America, Antarctica, Costa Rica, Russia, Jamaica, Rome, Greece and wherever else 4-Seasons Travel took them. Brigid is survived by her four children, Alison Squiers of Elmira, Timothy Galusha (Judi) from Phoenix, Jeffrey Galusha of Horseheads and Christopher Galusha (Beth) from Pittsford, NY. She has six grandchildren, Nathan, Erin, Max, McKensie, Emma, Sydney, and her faithful cat, Thor. Family and friends are invited to visit Barber Funeral Home 413 S.
