Obituary of Sharon Jean Youmans

Sharon Jean Youmans-Latshaw Age 82 of Horseheads, NY. Sharon was born January 8th 1941 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late Charles and Alberta (Emery) Latshaw. She passed away in peace at home on Thursday, December 28th 2023. Sharon grew up in Elmira Heights with her parents, 2 brothers and sister. After graduation, Sharon began working for Hardinge in Elmira. She went on to work for a lawyer and Marine Midland bank, finally, concentrating on computers and working for NYS at the Fire Academy and Elmira Prison. She retired from the Prison after 30 years of service to the State. Sharon was a devout Christian; she had an unwavering faithfulness that left a mark on everyone around her. As a long-standing member of Friends of the Cross church, she helped many individuals in need. She was dedicated to her alma mater and spent many years on the reunion committee for Elmira Heights High School. Sharon had a core group of friends and cousin, Grace Flint, from childhood that still got together for lunches and days out. We know she will miss these special friends and the shenanigans they got up to. She loved cars and music, which she passed along to her children. Many days were spent driving after church with her kids to sing, look at houses and check out local creeks. She also was a master at decorating cakes and making dolls. In her later years, she spent a lot of time learning about her family history. One wonderful memory in her life was when she was able to visit her great-grandfather's hometown in Germany. Sharon is survived by her children, Shelly McGilvra, Rex Youmans, Mike (Amber) Youmans, and David (Tammy) Youmans. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Chelsea (Ulises) Lopez, Connor McGilvra, Ford & Grayson Youmans, David, Elizabeth, Lillian, Caleb, and Malachi Youmans; one great grandchild Julian Lopez, her brother Charles (Rose) Latshaw; along with several dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sharon was proud of her children and loved spending time with them and her grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to visit the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., in Horseheads, on Saturday, January 6th 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Her funeral service will be held there at 4pm. After her service family and friends are invited to gather for food at Friends of the Cross Church, 2618 Goff Road, Corning, NY 14830. Those wishing may honor Sharon with a donation to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
