52 years.......half of her life, nearly all of mine. Mrs. Miles lived next door to us since I was about 4, maybe 5......I loved chatting with her when I was young! Growing up next door, I loved sharing my accomplishments with her and she seemed to enjoy hearing about school, events, church, boyfriends......She spent every Christmas Eve with us for as long as I can remember.....20 years? 30 years? When I had children of my own, my boys took turns walking next door to escort her over, sharing their own stories with her as my brother and I had. She could always be counted on to bring the potato salad and sparkling wine for the Christmas Eve toast! She would say to my parents, "I knew it was the holiday season when the plastic Santa light went in the window!", an old (circa 1970's ?) plastic Santa that we put in the same window facing her kitchen sink each and every year, especially for her. I always admired her style, her etiquette, her smile.......I loved being allowed to walk over to the fairgrounds by myself and going up into the office just to say hello, always asking if I could get a cup of the cold water from the cooler in the cone paper cups......she was my family......not Grandma or Auntie, always Mrs. Miles.......always loving me, always smiling, always warm, always there.....right next door, in the window, steps away......I love you and I will miss you the rest of my days.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful memory. She told me often that this was part of her tradition. Thank you to your family for being her extended family. Good neighbors are blessings.

Irene was an angel on earth! I was blessed by knowing her... just as everyone with whom she met. Such a good person, and one who provided an example for us to follow. God bless you, Irene! We will meet again in the hereafter!
