Obituary of Betty J. Spangenberg

Spangenberg, Elizabeth J. (Betty), age 88, of Horseheads, passed away July 29, 2011, at the Highlands Care Center in La Porte, PA. She retired from teaching at Broad Street School in Horseheads where she taught second and third grades. After her retirement, she was an active volunteer at the Elmira Heights and Horseheads Libraries, and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Horseheads First Presbyterian Church, where she served as deacon, as well as being a long-time member of the choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, Jr. and her parents Wynne I. and Irene K. Jefferds. She is survived by a son, Clayton D. (Susan) Spangenberg, III; a daughter, Patricia (Gerard) Powierski; a sister, Judith (Robert) Werner; three grandchildren, Corrin, Michelle and Cassandra; and numerous nephews and nieces.. Family and friends are invited to call at Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main Street, Horseheads, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. A graveside ceremony will be conducted in Maple Grove Cemetery, Broad St. in Horseheads on Thurs August 4 at 9:30 am. A Memorial Service honoring Elizabeth and her husband Clayton, who died earlier this year, will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church in Horseheads in September on a date to be determined.
