Obituary of Lyman P. Miller

Lyman P. “Bud” Miller of 126 Daffodil Drive, Horseheads, New York, passed away comfortably at home with his five children by his side on the 24th day of September, in the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twelve. He became Gods newest Angel and joined his beloved wife of 54 years at his side. He was born on 28 February 1932 in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late Albert P. and Myrtle M. Lyman Miller. His sisters Barbara Cortright of Pennsylvania and Carolyn Ruth Miller along with the rest of our ancestors were there in heaven awaiting his arrival. From an early age, our father had the responsibility of providing for his family. He lost his father to an accident when he was very young and he learned his responsibilities and a great many things from his grandfather and life it’s self. He never took the easy route to finding the answer to almost all questions, he took the right route. When he graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1951 he joined the Air Force as a radio operator and he shipped off to Europe. He spent some time in Germany but ultimately ended up at a small radio site on top of a hill just outside Void, France. This is where he met, fell in love with, and married Pierrette, his loving wife. At the end of his enlistment he was given the option to have his own radio site in Germany, however, with his new wife and first born son, Philippe, to care for, he opted to come home and raise his family in the small town of Corning, NY. There he started his career at Corning Glass Works as a machinist. hortly there after, his family grew to two more sons, Francis and Patrick, and a daughter Kathleen. Lyman and Pierrette's three sons and daughter grew up and prospered in their house on Daffodil Drive in Horseheads, and also went on to be great and wonderful parents as well, for they had great mentors. That was until a surprise blessed the family and a fourth son, Craig, was born. Philippe and Terre Miller now reside in Maryland, while their sons Jesse, Kyle, and Scott and Melissa Miller live in North Carolina. Francis and Beth Miller live in New York. Patrick Miller lives in New York. Jason Miller, and Sarah and Kelly Kopesky reside in Florida. Jeremy and Crystal Miller live in Oklahoma. Most recently, Jeremy and Crystal gave birth to Lyman and Pierrette's great-grandsons, Clayton and Jayse Miller. Kathleen and Bruce Gross live in New York while their daughter Jennifer and new husband Peter Bianca currently reside in Florida. Craig Miller and Jackie Slater make their home in New York. Our father was extremely detailed. Perfection was his guide to most things in this world, from his writing to his work for Corning Incorporated and the National Warplane Museum. Everything he did, he strived for perfection. This he instilled in all of us that grew up with him, or worked with him over the years. In the 44 years that was his career at Corning, Bud worked on many of the projects that produced some of the Steuben Ware items that were sold world wide. When fiber optics became a big part of the industry that Corning was involved in, he played a part in the research and development of some of the components that made the technology successful. After his retirement from Corning he lent his considerable talents to the National Warplane Museum as a volunteer. He made many parts for the museum exhibits and parts for the many aircraft that were part of both static displays as well as the operational aircraft that flew for the museum. Along the way, throughout his whole life, Bud made many friends. It did not matter who you were, if you met him, you were his friend. Many of the neighbors that lived on Daffodil Drive would see him sitting on his front porch. You would always get a wave as you passed by, whether it be driving in a car or walking along the street. If you were walking or running by, greetings or words of encouragement would always accompany the wave. His house was always open to those that wished to visit. Pierrette’s love of birds was carried on and many feeders can still be found around the house keeping their feathered bellies full. His talents, love and friendship will be missed by those lives he touched. In keeping with his wishes, services will be held privately with the immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Lyman with memorials in his name to the Paralyzed Veterans of America at www.pva.org. This was one organization that both Lyman and Pierrette contributed to on a regular basis to give back to those that have served our country.
