Obituary of William Francis Smart

SMART, William Francis Age 85 of Horseheads and formerly of the Bronx passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He will forever be in our hearts. William “Bill” is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mary “Yolie” (DeLuca); His children, Maria (Anthony) Perrone, Linda Adams, Bill Smart, Patricia (Kris) Reynolds and James (Alison) Smart; Grandchildren, Alyson, Brian (Leigh), Michelle, Paige, Taylor, Kristian, Candace, Ethan and Jace. Bill is also survived by his brother-in-law, Kevin Lynch, nephew, Kevin Lynch, niece Kerry Lynch Sister-in-law, Adelaide Bernhardt, brother-in-law, Dr. Vincent (Shirley) DeLuca,. sister-in-law, Joan DeLuca and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Sarah “Sadie” (McAuliffe) Smart and Sister, Evelyn Lynch. Bill’s career encompassed serving in the Navy and then entering law enforcement. He retired as a sergeant of the New York City Police Department. He then embarked on a career of insurance investigation for many years. Bill was known for his great sense of humor and wit. He loved reading and music and was known to break out in song. He often serenaded Mary , the love of his life, with their song “Younger Than Springtime” He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends especially the euchre and domino groups. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Friday Feb. 1, 2013 from 11:00 am-1:30 pm. his service will follow there at 1:30 pm. Burial service with military honors will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those wishing may remember Bill with memorials to Horseheads Fire & Rescue Co.
