Obituary of Vern Hill
Vern "Nate" Hill
Age 75 of Elmira passed away after a brief illness Saturday, July 19, 2014. He was born to Benjamin and Olive (VanGorder) Hill on July 7, 1939. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Crystal (McGrain) Hill; daughter and son, Tammy (Greg) Harvey of Horseheads, Donald "Stretch" Hill of Elmira; grandchildren Kimberly (Ryan Card) Harvey and Kyle Harvey; great grand children, Khloie and Peyton; siblings, Lora (Roy) Palmer of Big Flats, Lester (Patricia) Hill of Horseheads, Arland Hill of Delaware, and Alice (Ronald) Montgomery of Swansboro, NC. One of 15 siblings he was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters and also his grandson Alan Harvey. Nate was a longtime Elmira Resident and well known Contractor owning and operating Nate Hill's Excavation. He was also an independent trucker and woodworker who enjoyed an occasional trip to the Casino, the Bingo Hall and Camping at Lake Bonin. He was an accomplished local driver, racing in the late model sportsman class at Chemung Speedway, Pocono, Trenton and Shangri-La. Nate was also a Korean War Veteran servicing in the US Army. Most of all Vern was a dedicated husband, and devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed time with family. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Tuesday July 22, 2014 from 1-3:00 pm and again from 5-7:00 pm. His service will follow there at 7:00 pm. Burial will take place at the convenience of his family in Fitzsimmons Cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Those wishing may remember Nate with memorials to Chemung Co.
