Obituary of Lucille Dorothy Young

Lucille Dorothy Young ("Lucy"), age 87, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, NY. Lucy leaves behind three daughters: Kimberley Hurd (Bruce) of North Port, FL, Susan Personius (Bruce) of Prattsburgh, NY, and Sandra Haupt (Stephen) of Webster, NY; 9 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick Young and siblings Arthur Jr. Wilkinson and Donald Wilkinson. Born to Arthur and Ruth Wilkinson in Waverly, NY, Lucy had always been a strong, independent, and smart woman. She retired from the Chemung County License Bureau. On May 11, 1952 at the First Methodist Church in Waverly, NY, Lucy married Frederick Young - a military veteran and doting husband who shared her endless love of dogs. Settling in Horseheads, NY, they raised three beautiful daughters whom she had a very close relationship with. She joined them on annual shopping trips well into their adult years. Lucy also cherished and hosted many celebrations with her family, including Christmas, birthdays, and graduations. Fred and Lucy loved to camp and eagerly traveled down South to Myrtle Beach with their dog Whiskers in the winter months after retirement. At the age of 73, Lucy had a sudden stroke and became paralyzed on her right side. Her ability to speak was also disabled, making it difficult and frustrating for her to communicate. Even so, Lucy's intelligence and sense of humor remained intact until her last days, proving the strength of her mind outlasted the limitations of her body. Lucy moved into a nursing home shortly after her stroke, and Fred greeted her each and every morning, staying with her until dusk. This lasted for 11 years, never missing a day. After becoming ill himself years later, Fred joined Lucy in the same nursing facility and remained by her side until he passed away peacefully four years ago. Lucy's daughters adorned her room each holiday with lights and other decorations to continue the traditions she so deeply cherished with her family. They also treated her to special shopping trips outside of the nursing home whenever possible, knowing that Lucy would enjoy these outings with her girls. After spending 15 years with the loving staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility, Lucy was finally set free of her disabled body. She will be laid to rest in Woodlawn National Cemetery next to her husband Fred, together at long last. An intimate celebration of Lucy and Fred's life will be held for immediate family.
